International Sports are Still Dominated by Soccer

Soccer is among the most popular sports all over the world. While this is the premier sport in majority of European countries, it has only started to become popular in the US over the last two decades.

The history of contemporary soccer can be traced back to Europe during the Middle Ages and has its roots tied up to Chinese culture. There were no formal rules until 1848 when a Cambridge University group formulated a set of rules or guidelines. Over the next decades, such rules have been altered by several different organizations seeking to support soccer leagues of their own. By early 1900’s, soccer games that were organized had become widespread and lots of different regulating bodies were created so as to standardize the rules as well as to encourage international competition. It was in the 1900’s when Soccer was initially added into the lineup of the summer Olympics held in Paris. This paved the way for the establishment of FIFA, which is the dominant organization of the worldwide soccer scene.

The FIFA World Cup is the premier event of modern soccer. This is a tournament being conducted every four years ever since 1930, excluding at the time of the Second World War. Participating countries send out their national team comprising of homegrown players who face off their contemporaries coming from other countries. There are regional qualifying rounds held during this four year episode in-between Cups. There are 32 teams all in all that participate in the actual game. One country assumes the role of host throughout the entire tournament period and rounds usually run a little more than a month. When there are only two teams remaining, they compete for the championship title and the triumphant team is declared as overall winner. FIFA World Cup happens to be a most watched sport event worldwide. In 2006, people numbering about 750 million viewed the championship event on TV.

Aside from the FIFA Cup, lots of players participate as well in professional leagues, such as the Boston soccer league in the U.S. Prominent players are receiving quite a large amount of money in addition to becoming international superstars. The major league went through a rocky beginning in the United States but it continues to thrive in a rather limited market.

This game has gained prominence in various parts of the world, including Boston soccer, and especially in developing countries. This is usually because of its simple rules along with minimal amount of needed equipment. To get the match going, everything that is needed is a ball, a field that is open, and a method for marking the goal sections. All such features cause the sport to be extremely accessible for any country, even the very impoverished ones.
